Mariner | Rhodes

  • Aggressive stoloniferous growth for rapid ground cover, weed suppression and erosion control

  • Strong tillering and exceptional recovery after grazing or cutting

  • High leaf-to-stem ratio and high salt tolerance for improved forage quality and palatability

  • Later flowering and even maturity help maintain forage quality and palatability later into the growing season

  • Ideal for both intensive grazing and hay production

  • Performs exceptionally well under irrigation and higher fertility conditions

  • Performs exceptionally in mixed tropical and subtropical pastures and is compatible with a wide range of perennial grasses and legumes

  • Best suited to full-sun environments with minimal shade

Packshot General

Mariner is a high-performing tetraploid Rhodes grass bred for superior production, persistence and forage
quality. Well suited to intensive grazing, hay production and high-performance pasture systems. Mariner
consistently delivers exceptional dry matter yields, outstanding persistence and extended feed quality
compared to conventional Rhodes grass cultivars.

Features & Benefits

Establishment Requirements
• Adapted to a wide range of soils, but can be challenging to establish on heavy cracking clay soils
• Minimum annual rainfall: 600 - 650mm, or under irrigation
• Establish into a fine, firm, weed-free, moist, and well-prepared seedbed. Good seed-to-soil contact and adequate moisture are essential for successful establishment
• Seeding rate: 8 - 12kg/ha (rainfed conditions), 12 - 20kg/ha (intensive irrigation conditions)

Management Guidelines
Successful establishment depends on careful grazing management during the first season. Delay grazing until plants
are well established and have developed strong roots, then introduce light grazing. Rotational grazing is recommended
to maintain long-term persistence. A well-structured fertilisation programme based on soil analysis will maximise
productivity, persistence and long-term pasture performance.

System Fit
• Premium choice for intensive (irrigated) grazing and hay production systems
• Suitable as both a permanent pasture and a short- to medium-term pasture ley
• Excellent for land reclamation and erosion control
• Suitable for horse pastures due to naturally low oxalate levels
• Well suited to soils where salinity is a constraint
